Metro Cash & Carry Workers to Stage Protest

BANGALORE: Metro Cash and Carry Employees Union said on Saturday that it would be staging a protest on January 9 in front of the Labour Department office.

Alleging  violation of workers’ rights and labour laws, Advisor to the Union J R Shivashankar told reporters that despite the multinational retail chain growing rapidly in its turnover, the employees ‘reaped no benefit’. “Employees are paid a wage of only around `4,000 and if the employees place any demands of higher salaries or perks, the company suspends them,” charged Shivashankar.

The German company employs around 1,800 people in its two branches ( Yeshwantpur and Kanakapura Road).

The Union added that Labour Department had recently fined it for remaining open for 24 hours.
