Coles Park: A park right out of history

Sangeeta Bora

Constructed in 1914, Coles Park located in Fraser Town is spread over 12 acres. This is not only one of the biggest parks that Bangalore can boast, but its historical significance is also worth a mention. During the colonial rule, military bands played here. The Bangalore Rifle Volunteers played marching music on special occasions. Today, the Bandstand area has benches and a walking track.

Initially named after AH Coles, a resident of Mysore, today the park has been renamed as Freedom Fighters Park.

As you walk around the park you will realise that the park is a joggers paradise and favourite hub for children. One of the most striking features that puts this park in a different league is its disabled friendly facilities.

“There is a wheelchair track in the play space that allows easy movement for wheelchair users. I come here for a walk with my children,” says Vipin Thange, a regular here. Voicing a similar opinion, Raj Agarwal, a businessman says, “Although I am originally from Rajasthan, my forefathers had been living in Bangalore. My parents used to bring us here and today I come here with my wife.”

Enlightening us on the food culture in the park, Dikipa Nair says, “Coles Road is a paradise for food lovers. We love coming to the park in the evening for street food.” Besides this, the park has laughing club activities in the morning and roller skating classes in the evenings.
