Drawing inspiration from Sufi poetry

Express News Service

Vasundhara Das and Mir Mukh-tiar Ali are all set to bring exquisite contemporary Sufi music to Bangalore’s audiences. At a press conference held on Wednesday, The Shah Hussain Project a brainchild of Vasundhara Das, was introduced. The concert will be presented by Bhoo-mija, a Trust for showcasing Indian performing arts in India and abroad. This Shah Huss-ain Proj-ect draws inspiration from the 16th century Sufi poetry of Shah Hussain, and is set to contemporary music. The musicians in this project are drummer extraordinaire Roberto Narain, keyboardist Rajan Tisge, guitarists Hemanth Diwakaran and Anish Nadh, and bass guitarist Shalini Mohan.

Vasundhara Das, singer, actress, composer and songwriter from Bangalore, has earned many accolades from the entertainment industry. Her work in the Mumbai film industry; and in Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu movies is well known across the country. She began learning Hindustani classical music as a child and has been the playback singer for a plethora of hit film songs, working with reputed musicians such as A. R. Rahman. Comfortably multilingual when it comes to music, Vasundhara sings in Spanish as well as Indian languages and dialects. Vasundhara has broadened her scope as a musician over the years, and is now a composer who has the music for some upcoming films to her credit. She has been a part of a number of independent music collaborations, with musicians here in India and abroad.  On the other hand, Rajasthani singer Mir Mukhtiar Ali’s voice does justice to his people’s heritage. 25 generations of the Mirasis of Marwar in western India have been passing on their heritage of Sufiyana Kalaam verbally to the younger generation, and Mukhtiyar is of the 26th generation. Mukhtiar Ali’s powerful vocals were a part of the Kabir Project, with films made and festivals held all over India, started by the faculty and students of Srishti, Bangalore. He also performs folk songs and the songs of Kabir at concerts and satsangs.

Roberto Narain’s name strikes a chord with music fans of all ages. A drummer since the age of thirteen, Roberto’s delight in live performance has brought audiences to their feet at all kinds of musical events.

Roberto’s musical skills and technical knowledge give him the ability to be at ease with any genre of music or musical style. His musical open-mindedness led him in different directions over the years - learning Carnatic percussion, being a founding member of bands like iconic metal band Millennium, playing with musicians from around the world and from everywhere in India.

The concert will take place on May 5 at 7 pm at Chowdiah Memorial Hall. May 5 will see the launch of this independent album, released by The Active, followed by the concert. The album, titled ‘The Shah Hussain Project Volume 1’, will be available on several online stores.
