Chaos as workers try to raze Devaraj Urs home

Express News Service

Chaos prevailed near late Chief Minister D Devaraj Urs’ residence at Sadashivnagar here on Wednesday morning when some workers tried to demolish the old building.

It is said that the Urs residence, which was in the name of his daughter Chandraprabha Urs, was bought by Minister Shamanur Shivashankarappa’s son S S Mallikarjun, an MLA, and was being demolished on his directions.

Police rushed to the spot after receiving a call from RTI activist Lakshiminarayana, who was staying in the outhouse. On reaching there, they came to know that the property belongs to Mallikarjun’s wife. “We cannot do anything in the matter. Even BBMP and BDA officials say they are helpless,” police said.

Fans of Devaraj Urs protested against the demolition claiming that the property belongs to the state government. Several requests have been made to convert the building into a museum. This is the only legacy of the late leader, they said and sought the government’s intervention.

Devaraj Urs purchased the piece of land on Sadashivnagar 18th Cross which was later transferred to his daughter Chandraprabha Urs. She later sold the property to Mallikarjun’s wife in 2010 to meet the medical expenses of her husband who was suffering from cancer. But Chandraprabha allegedly did not vacate the house and Mallikarjun secured an order from the court to take over the property.

In the interim, Chadraprabha’s children filed a case in the court claiming a share in their grandfather’s property. They claimed that their mother had sold the property without their consent. The house was vacated six months ago and all the family members had shifted to Mysore.
