Graft: Woman Revenue Official Trapped

Express News Service

Lokayukta police have arrested an assistant revenue officer for allegedly taking a bribe from her colleague.

Chandrakanta, who works in the Malleswaram sub-division of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 from Shashidhar, a tax inspector in the same sub-division.

Shashidhar approached the Lokayukta police and lodged a complaint against her. Chandrakanta reportedly said the Rs 5,000 would go towards appeasing members of BBMP committees, who might otherwise write adverse reports.

When Shashidhar refused to pay, she allegedly said he would face professional hurdles.

The Lokayukta police laid a trap and arrested Chandrakanta red-handed while accepting `5,000 at her office in Malleswaram.

Lokayukta officials also found unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 26,500 in her possession. Investigators are trying to find out if she had collected money from other officials on the same pretext. Chandrakanta was produced before a Lokayukta special court and sent to judicial custody.
