MOM's First Course Correction Tonight

Express News Service

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to carry out the first course correction for its Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) on Tuesday night.

Earlier this month, ISRO had fired the main engine on the Orbiter and sent it into a Mars transfer trajectory around the Sun. The spacecraft will travel 680 million km and a total of four course corrections have been planned over the next 11 months.

The Orbiter is currently travelling at a speed of 32.8 km/sec. ISRO engineers have worked out the transfer path in a way that almost no fuel is used except during course corrections.
