Krishna water supply was hit for the past three days due to leaks in the Kandaleru-Poondi canal at Ubbalamadugu. The Andhra Pradesh government’s Irrigation and Command Area Development Department officials have relaid the concrete to ensure the supply is not affected.

PWD sources told Express that the discharge of Krishna water from the Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh was halted on July 16.

It was resumed around 9 am on Wednesday, a PWD official said. “They have released 300 cusecs of water,” the official said.

From the time Krishna water was released from Kandleru reservoir on July 1, it has been beset by problems. First, there was a delay in the water reaching the zero point and officials had to plug the leaks. Then the water took a long time to reach the Poondi reservoir, which was attributed to the presence of siphons that are used to convey water across a natural depression under a road or under a canal, in Alikudi odai and Rajan Odai. It was only on July 13 officials realised that the leak in Kandaleru-Poondi canal at Ubbalamadugu was the main cause for water trickling into Poondi. Immediately, the water supply from Kandleru was stopped and the concrete was relaid.

“Henceforth, there won’t be any problem. The water is expected to reach Zero Point on Thursday,” he said.

His statement comes when Metro Water is struggling to maintain the supply to the city. Even Red Hills reservoir is on the verge of drying up and Metro Water is taking up contingency measures to ensure water supply.
