On World Environment Day this year, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) organised an in-house event based on the United Nations theme- ‘Think, Eat, Save’.
The theme aims to bring awareness on food waste, food loss and encourage one to become more aware of the environmental impact of the food choices they make.
KSPCB environmental officer Viji Kartikeyan said, “We host an event at Chowdaiah Memorial Hall where environmental awards will be given away and saplings will be planted.”
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. The Lalit Ashok and the Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota (BOSCO), an NGO for children in need organised an awareness camp at Kempegowda bus station to educate passengers on ‘cleanliness and food waste reduction’.
In an effort to fight the increasing concretisation and loss of greenery in the city, MEG and Centre, along with BBMP and the BDA undertook a massive plantation drive with the motto ‘Each One Plant One’ on the day. A total of 4,000 saplings, including flowering trees, medicine yielding trees, biofuel trees and fruit bearing trees were planted.
Real estate company, Salarpuria Sattva announced a similar campaign in association with the BMTC.
This month-long initiative is aimed to create awareness about environment protection across the city of Bangalore and had collaborated with Rashtra Bandhu, an NGO.
