A college admitted 96 students in 2012-13 for BEd despite not having affiliation for four years. And its students are actually writing the ongoing BEd exams “at their own risk.”
The BRV BEd College, Mahadeshwaranagar, by the Bangalore University’s admission in a written reply to the Department of Higher Education on May 30, does not figure in the university’s records. It does not have affiliation since 2008. Still, the college made admissions for the year 2012-13 in the hope that it would receive BU affiliation in time.
“We approached the university for renewal of affiliation in February last year. We were not functional for four years since 2008. We were told to apply for fresh affiliation. We admitted 96 students and hoped that we would get the required clearance along with the other 47 ‘irregular’ colleges,” said G S Ravi, director, BRV BEd College.
Documents available with Express, however, narrate a different story. The college was given affiliation by the department on June 7, just three days before the commencement of the exams. On June 6, even before the college received the affiliation, the university included BRV BEd college in the list of colleges that were permitted to take the exams.
According to a report by the local inquiry committee (LIC) that visited this college in May last year, the college did not have recognition from the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), an apex regulatory body for teacher education.
But the LIC recommended the college for affiliation in a clear contravention of Section 59 of the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000. This LIC report, sources say, was not placed before the Academic Council or the Syndicate. So, 96 students of this college have risked their future by writing the ongoing exams, as their results could be annulled.
The college uploaded its admission details in January. “It is a lapse on the part of BU to have allowed all such colleges to upload admission details,” said a senior official.
