To help dance enthusiasts understand the similarities and differences between Indian classical dance forms, International Centre for Performing Arts (ICPA) conducted workshops on Mohiniyattam and Kathak over two days in Duo Marvel Layout, Yelahanka, recently.

On Tuesday, Mythili Anoop, a Mohiniyattam dancer, took participants through the history of Mohiniyattam and compared its postures and basic steps with Bharathanatyam and Kathak. "This dance form exudes enchantment, grace and passion. Mohiniyattam is a fusion of Bharathanatyam and Kathakali, as it combines the elegance of Bharatanatyam and dynamism and vigour of Kathakali," said Anoop.

During a session on  Wednesday, Sampada Pillai, a Kathak dancer explained the different gharanas like Lucknow, Jaipur and Banaras and demonstrated their differences in the footwork. She also highlighted the variations in taal bol of each gharana and eventually delved into the abhinaya aspect of Kathak. The dance workshops will continue till  May 26
