Funds given to restore Tamil University's lost glory

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for the third time has allocated Rs 12 crore for the Tamil University to restore its glory, said P Palaniappan, Minister for Higher Education, here on Thursday.

The Minister, who also holds the office of the Pro-Chancellor of the Tamil University, said during the 7th convocation of the university on Thursday that the government had allocated Rs 41.7 lakh to the university for translating Thirukkural into the Chinese language.

“Similar sanction was accorded to translate the works of Bharathiyar and Bharathidasan,” the Minister added. Rs 5 lakh has been set apart as seed money for publication of Tamil Civilisation, a journal on a regular basis, the Minister noted.

The Minister reminded the audience that the Chief Minister had earlier allotted Rs 100 crore for installing a Tamil Annai statue and cultural symbols of Tamils in Madurai.

Governor K Rosaiah, who presided over the convocation, conferred doctorates on 109 students and gave gold medals to 10 outstanding students.

As many as 1,950 students received their degrees during the convocation. M Thirumalai, Vice-Chancellor, explained the various projects and work undertaken by the university. He said that digitisation of Modi manuscripts during the Thanjavur Maratha rule has been done with the first tranche of `14 lakh given by the Maharastra government.

Stating that the UGC had earlier granted Rs 1 crore to begin courses on Geographic Information System and Coastal Eco System, the VC said that the Central Institute of Classical Tamil had sanctioned Rs 1 crore for taking up research on Tolkappium.
