Multiplication (Vertical and Crosswise)

Kumudha Krishnan

We have learned many methods of multiplication, most of them used for special numbers, like duplex or near a base. But there is a method that works for all numbers. This is the vertical and crosswise method, to multiply any two numbers. First let us look at multiplication of two-digit numbers.

The specialty of this method is that we get the answer in a single step unlike the traditional method which takes three operations. The steps:

• First multiply the units digits vertically.

• Next multiply the digits crosswise and add the answers.

• Multiply the tens digits vertically.

Example: 12 x 32
