In a special drive against drunken driving, city traffic police booked 997 people in five hours across the city on Saturday night. Last week, the police had registered 1,076 cases of drunken driving.

During the drive held between 9 pm and 2 am at 112 places around the city, 13,231 vehicles were stopped and their drivers/riders asked to take the breath-analyser test. Of them, 997 drivers, including four women, were found to have consumed alcohol beyond permissible limits.

The highest number of cases (77) was booked in Peenya traffic police station limits, a press release said.

The police also impounded the driving licences of the offenders and have recommended the Transport Department to suspend the licences.
