We have seen the use of digital roots to check various calculations. Today we look at how we can make use of digital roots to find square roots.

There are two uses of digital root in squares. It helps us know whether a number is a perfect square or not, and we can use it to find the square root of perfect squares. For this we need to know the following:

■ Square numbers will only have digital roots 1, 4, 7, 9

■ They end in 1, 4, 5, 6, 9, 0

■ This means that square numbers cannot have certain digit sums and they cannot end with certain figures.

Using this we can find out whether a number is a perfect square and find the square root of perfect square numbers. We have learned to find the square root of a four-digit perfect square number. Now we make use of the digital root to do the same thing.

Find the square root of 6889

First we split the number into two parts,

There are two easy ways of deciding whether the answer is 83 or 87.

One is to find the square of 85 and compare it with 6889 and get the answer, which we have already learnt

The other way is to use the digital root.

■ Digital root of 6889 is 4

■ Digital root of 832 is (8+3=11=22) which is 4

■ Digital root of 872 is (8+7=15=62) which is 9

■ So the correct answer is 83

Example 2: Find the square root of 8464

We split it into two parts,

Now to decide between 92 and 98.

■ Digital root of 8464 is 4.

■ Digital root of 922 is (9+2=11=22) = 4

■ Digital root of 982 is (9+8=17=82) = 64 = 1

■ So the answer is 92

Vedic Mathematics is a systematic, simplified and unique system. It is a mental tool for calculation that gives the student a lot of flexibility, fun and satisfaction. Ok, now how about scoring 101%? Is it possible to score 101%?

Yes! Let us see how it is possible. Let the alphabets A, B, C… Z be given values 1, 2, 3… 26.

H-A-R-D-W-O-R-K = 8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11 = 98%

K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-E = 11+14+15+23+12+5+4+7+5 = 96%

A-T-T-I-T-U-D-E  =1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5 = 100%

The final part - love of God:

L-O-V-E-O-F-G-O-D =12+15+22+5+15+6+7+15+4 = 101%.

So we can say that hard work and knowledge will bring you close to 100%, attitude will get you to 100% and if you have love of God you can get 101%.

As we end our academic year I hope all of you have enjoyed learning new methods of calculation. Practise them and enjoy solving problems. See you in the next academic year.
