Constable, Aide Held for Extortion Bid

BANGALORE: J P Nagar police on Thursday arrested two men, including a head constable attached to S J Park police station, for allegedly trying to extort money from a businessman.

Police said head constable Devaraju (54), a resident of Basaveshwara Nagar, and Srinivas (47), a painter from Shantinagar, went to Chetan Hardware in J P Nagar II Phase and introduced themselves as officials from the Sales Tax Department. They accused shop owner Kunnaram of mixing kerosene with thinner and threatened to seize the stock of thinner if he did not pay them. Kunnaram grew suspicious of their behaviour and managed to nab the duo with the help of neighbours and handed them over to the police.

SBM in a Fix

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has accused the staff of State Bank of Mysore’s (SBM) Avenue Road branch of misappropriating a fixed deposit of `10 crore.

KSPCB said it had deposited the sum on May 16, 2013, and the bank was to return the money on May 17 this year. The money was not returned on the ground that the board had borrowed from the bank.

Mother Killed in Front of Infant

A 31-year-old woman was killed by unidentified assailants in front of her 18-month-old daughter at her house in Srinivasa Layout on Friday morning. The deceased is Hazeera Banu, wife of goods auto driver Hayath Pasha.
