The accused are Gopinath (21), Manikandan (22) and Manikandan (24), all residents of Bharati Nagar. According to police sources, on May 18, the trio and some of their friends, had gone for a ride on MG Road after a party. Venkatesh was having tea at a roadside shop near the Bescom office when he saw the gang. He yelled at them for making a racket and speeding.

This started a shouting match. Venkatesh took a knife from his pocket and stabbed one of them, Vijay Singh, in the hand. Consequently, Venkatesh was beaten up and when he attempted to escape on his bike, three of the men followed him, stabbed him with the knife he had brandished earlier and fled the scene.

Venkatesh was found in a pool of blood by the night beat police, who took him to a hospital. But he succumbed soon after.

Ulsoor police had registered a case immediately but couldn’t find the attackers.

The case was later transferred to the Ashok Nagar police station, who found links between the murder and a robbery attempt case filed the same night. The police summoned the trio and they are said to have confessed during interrogation.
