BENGALURU: Condemning the BJP for its election manifesto that has allegedly promised eviction of street vendors, the Bruhat Bangalore Beedhi Vyapari Sanghatanegala Okkoota has demanded that the party withdraw the statement immediately.
C E Rangaswamy, the Okkoota’s general secretary, told reporters here on Thursday that the BJP should “clarify its stand” on street vendors. Mohammed Fayaz, a member, called upon the Congress and the JD(S) to explain why they have not bothered to take a stand on the rights and welfare of street vendors in their manifestos.
Lekha K G, another Okkoota member, welcomed the fact that the Civic Front coalition party’s manifesto has called for welfare measures for street vendors and promised widening of footpaths.
She also lauded the Lok Satta party for seeking implementation of a ‘Street Vendors Policy’, but asked them “to take cognizance of the fact that there is now not just a policy but a law in itself related to street vendors”.
