BENGALURU: In a futile attempt, three unidentified thieves struck a co-operative bank in Rajajinagar on Wednesday night.

Police said the incident took place around 2.30 am. The three men opened the door of Veerashaiva Co-operative bank, located in 3rd Block Rajajinagar, by using duplicate keys.

While they were ransacking the bank a security guard, Mani (58), heard the sound and came to see what was happening. He noticed the three men and started screaming. Fearing being caught, the miscreants attacked him with an iron rod and fled in a Maruti Omni.

The injured guard went to the second floor of the building, where a girls hostel is located and alerted inmates about the incident. The students then alerted warden Jayasri, who rushed informed the police. Mani was taken to a private hospital and Nagesh (52), another guard was deployed to guard the building. After a while, police said Nagesh  collapsed and students took him to a nearby hospital, where he died due to cardiac arrest.

Rajajinagar police along with a dog squad inspected the spot and recovered CCTV footage to trace the accused.
