BENGALURU: A city-based scientist and his team at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research here have invented a biodegradable detergent that does not cause build-up of toxic foam. The commonly used detergents are non-biodegradable.

Dr Jayant Haldar and his student Jiaul Hoque have developed this class of cleave surfactants.

Haldar says, “This is a surfactant detergent which will foam during use, but after use, it will not form a froth and is biodegradable. It will never cause the type of problem that Bellandur Lake has faced.”

“People should be encouraged to use these kinds of detergents,” he said adding that it is not toxic to aquatic animals or birds. Its cleaning properties are better than the commonly available detergents, he claimed.
