Relief for Varsities, Government Notification Stayed

Express News Service

BENGALURU:The High Court on Wednesday stayed the state government notification directing Yenepoya and Nitte Universities to surrender 25 per cent of their total number of MBBS seats to the government quota.

The government issued the notification on July 2, 2014, which was challenged by the two Mangaluru-based universities. Hearing the petitions, a division bench of Justices N Kumar and G Narendar, however, directed Yenepoya University to surrender 13 seats and Nitte University to give up 12 seats for the academic year 2015-16 to the CET.

The petitioners had appealed to the court to quash the notification and stay the notification pending disposal of the petitions.

During the arguments, it was brought to the notice of the court that several deemed universities have not contributed from the original quota or the enhanced quota.

The government had initially asked both the universities to surrender 25 per cent of their total seats in MBBS course. Later, the order was modified restricting it to 25 per cent of enhanced seats.

However, in July, the government issued a direction asking them to surrender 25 per cent of their total number of seats.
