RGUHS Stares at Second Fixed Deposit Scam in Two Months

Rashmi Belur

BENGALURU: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) may be looking at another fixed deposit misuse scam and that too within a span of two months. This time it is at the Vijaya Bank in Mysuru where the varsity has a fixed deposit of `10 crore at the bank’s Beguru branch. Though the FD matured in December 2015, the bank has not transferred the amount yet to the university despite repeated requests.

“The bank authorities were supposed to transfer the amount in December itself, but they did not. When we enquired, we got to know about some mismanagement. The bank authorities are saying an internal inquiry is going on and they will transfer the amount along with the interest,” said Dr K S Ravindranath, RGUHS Vice-Chancellor.

In a similar incident, Rs 10 crore FD at Syndicate Bank’s MS building branch in Bengaluru was misused and transferred to a Savings Account. The bank manager had filed a complaint at the Vidhana Soudha police in this regard.

In the case of the Mysuru incident, the university had lodged a complaint with the Vijaya Bank manager at its Head Office in Bengaluru. “Though we have complained with the Head Office, we are taking legal opinion on filing a police complaint,” Ravindranath said.

Meanwhile, Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil, has reiterated that the university transfer all FDs from various banks to a single bank.

“When the previous incident happened with Syndicate Bank itself, I had insisted that the university authorities transfer all the FDs to one bank by considering the one which provides the highest interest. I will have a discussion with the Vice-Chancellor on the issue,” Patil told Express.

In April 2015, the university syndicate had passed a resolution about transferring all its deposits to nationalised banks. “We have also demanded that the Finance Officer bring out a white paper on the financial details of the university. But so far, no efforts have been made in this regard,” said a senior syndicate member of the university.

Varsity Has Rs 750 Cr in FD accounts

The RGUHS has Rs 750 crore deposited in fixed deposit accounts in various banks in the state. It has rS 500 crore deposit at State Bank of Mysore, rS 200 crore at Canara Bank and short-term deposits at some cooperative and scheduled banks.
