Express News Service

BENGALURU:  A 15-year-old girl, who had set herself ablaze on March 17, succumbed in Victoria Hospital on Sunday night. She was allegedly depressed as she was being blackmailed by her boyfriend.

The deceased  Soundarya was a resident of Janata Colony in Jagjeevanram Nagar. The only child of her parents, Soundarya was said to be in a relationship with Praveen (19). Both were neighbours and the families knew each other.

Police said the duo fell in love a few months ago. Praveen told his parents about Soundarya and expressed his desire to marry her. Praveen’s parents had approached Soundarya’s parents over the marriage, who refused as she was still a minor.

This decision didn’t go down well with Praveen and he began to threaten Soundarya. He used to blackmail her, threatening to circulate their intimate videos.

On March 17, Soundarya allegedly set herself ablaze after dousing herself with kerosene.  She was shifted to Victoria hospital and was battling for life.

A senior police official said the on-duty police officials had taken the victim’s statement before she died. She had stated that she was frequently subjected to harassment and was threatened by Praveen.  JJ Nagar police have registered a case of abetment to suicide.
