BENGALURU: Even 24 hours after heavy rain lashed Bengaluru on Monday night, its after effects were still felt on Wednesday. At JC Road near Purnima Theatre, a large chunk of the road caved in on Tuesday night and one unaware motorist, Soundar Rajan, suffered minor injuries when he fell from his two-wheeler. After the incident, barricades were placed at the road’s entrance. Local residents alleged that the ongoing construction work beside the road led to the incident.

Rajan’s mother Bhavani said, “This is the fourth time the road has caved in. Earlier, five houses were damaged. Authorities have to take action to ensure the safety of the nearby houses.”Koramangala’s ST Bed was among the worst affected areas. Narendra Pai, a resident of the area, said, “Our sump was contaminated with sewage water so we had to drain out all the water. But due to the power cut, we could not refill it for a long time.” There were frequent power cuts throughout the day, Pai added.

At J K Pura in Wilson Garden, residents vented their ire on ward councillor Soumya Shivshankar who visited the area. They asked her to find a solution to the roads becoming slushy every time it rains. The counsellor informed the constituency’s MLA N A Haris, who arranged for BBMP workers to clean up the roads.

The counsellor said, “Though the government has assigned funds, there is delay in the receipt. RCC walls are being built for stormwater drains but the fact that these works were taken up in monsoon is a problem. All councillors had demanded SWD works to be taken up in the council about three to four months ago.”

The basement of the BMTC bus depot at Koramangala 6th Block was inundated with 4 feet of water on Tuesday night. Fire Department personnel began to pump out the water on Tuesday night and finished only by Wednesday afternoon. Several areas suffered power cuts and broadband and landline connections were also affected.
