BENGALURU: Fares on Namma Metro have been increased by 10 to 12 per cent in light of the commissioning of the entire Phase-I. The hike will come into effect from Sunday when the commercial operations of the North-South Corridor are set to begin.

The decision was taken during a high-level meet held by Metro officials on Thursday night.

Confirming the news to Express, Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development, Mahendra Jain, said,

“Yes, the fares will go up approximately by 10 per cent.” The minimum fare (`10) between two stations will remain unchanged. “This is regardless of whether the distance between two stations is 600m or 1.5km,” said a Metro official.

According to a top Metro official, the fares are fixed this time based on the footfalls at each station. The existing Purple Line (Baiyappanahalli to Mysore Road) and operational part of Green Line (Mantri Square Sampige Road to Nagasandra) will see the increase effected. It will be automatically incorporated when fixing the fares for the new stretch from Mantri Square to Yelachenahalli.

BMRCL Chief Public Relations Officer U A Vasanth Rao said, “We have not increased the fares since the launch of Metro services in the city in 2011. The additional sum will go towards funding our operations and maintenance costs and towards debt servicing.”

The full fare table from point to point will be released on Saturday.
