BENGALURU: The expected populist move of waiving water and sanitation bills of slum dwellers was announced in the state budget. In addition, each slum household will get free Cauvery water up to 10,000 litres per month.

These apply to those dwelling in 30x20 feet site or less. “Altogether, 362 authorised slum hutments in the city will benefit from the move,” engineer in-chief, BWSSB, Kemparamaiah said.

Asked about the free water supply, he said the monthly household bill of `148 for 10,000 litres would be paid by the government to the BWSSB. “Houses which consume more than the fixed amount will have to pay for the balance consumed,” he said.

Treatment of sewage has been given the importance it deserves with the budget aiming to increase the capacity of sewage discharged to 1,576 million litres per day from the present 721 million litres.

Four STPs of 440 million litre capacity, which will cost `1,209 crore, will be started under the mega city project. “They will be funded 50% by KIUDFC and 25% each by the state government and the BWSSB,” Kemparamaiah said.
