BENGALURU: The long-drawn demand for the closure of the KCDC plant at Kudlu got shriller on Sunday as residents held a sit-in protest in front of the plant and decided to extend it throughout the night.

A blood donation camp — Blood to Breathe — which also served as a protest against the plant was carried out from 9am on Sunday. After the camp, about 100 residents, including children, assembled in front of the plant. Some of those assembled had covered their faces, thanks to the foul smell emanating from the plant.

Civic activist Kavitha Reddy, who has been a vocal proponent of the protest, addressed the assembled people. She said, “The BBMP-appointed experts are running away from us. We called them for a debate but they didn’t turn up. We will sit here and protest, only then will they take us seriously.  Don’t get up until they agree.” The protesters shouted slogans of “down down BBMP, shut down KCDC.”

The residents protested throughout the night. Anis Padela, another protester, said the foul smell is mainly attributed to the plant receiving more waste than its capacity.
