BENGALURU: A woman who jumped into Bellandur Lake to commit suicide was rescued after a two-hour-long operation carried out by the police on Wednesday evening.

Police said the woman, Madamma (60), a resident of Yamalur, jumped into the lake after a quarrel with her family members. The woman didn’t drown due to the heavy growth of weeds on the fringe of the lake, but began to slowly sink into the lake.

A member of the home guards, who was posted near the lake to keep a vigil on it, spotted her and mistook her for a dead body. He alerted the Marathalli police station, following which seven to eight police personnel arrived on the spot.

Sub-inspector Nagaraju M alerted the fire brigade, but realised that in case the woman was alive the fire engine would be too late to save her as the unconscious woman was slowly sinking. He said, “We arranged for a ladder and placed it on the lake. We then tied ropes around some men, who managed to reach the woman through the ladder.” Once the men reached the ladder, they found her to be unconscious but breathing.

Once Madamma was pulled out, police realised that if they call an ambulance it might be too late to save her. So they took her to Sakra World Hospital in their Hoysala car. Madamma was admitted to the hospital and is currently recovering there. Police said her family was informed about the incident. The other police personnel who played a major role in the rescue were Manjunath Swamy and Ravi Shankar.
