BENGALURU:A spate of lynching incidents in the state and across the country has the city police take steps on war-footing to prevent gullible public from falling for misinformation on social media about child lifters. The latest lynching incidents in Bidar and Chamrajpet in Bengaluru has goaded the city police to appeal to the public not to fall for such misinformation and rumours.

City Police Commissioner T Suneel Kumar told The New Indian Express that the police personnel were ordered to approach citizens to create awareness on this issue.“The Hoysala staff have distributed pamphlets in the city. We have also taken to social media as part of a major awareness campaign to stop rumours being spread over WhatsApp (about child lifters). We have identified those sharing false messages of child-lifters and they have been sent into judicial custody.”

“Creating awareness among the public is a continuous process. We are doing our best not to repeat such lynching incidents where innocent people lose their lives. Policemen are interacting with the people within their respective jurisdictions, asking them to approach police if they hear such rumours instead of taking law in their own hands,” Kumar said.
