Bhubaneswar gears up for Zero Night celebrations

City imposes curbs on DJ and roadside parties, enforces crowd control and drunk-driving checks, while hotels roll out themed events and gala dinners

BHUBANESWAR: As countdown to New Year begins, the Commissionerate Police has issued strict guidelines to ensure a safe and incident-free celebration.

City police said music and entertainment activities will be permitted only till midnight and there will be restrictions on DJ and roadside celebrations. Event organisers have been directed to obtain prior permission and adhere to crowd control norms. To maintain law and order and ensure a smooth celebration, around 15 platoons of police force will be deployed across the city with special focus on traffic management.

The fire brigade is also on alert, while hotels, bars and restaurant owners have been directed to implement comprehensive security measures. Police said there will also be a special drive against drunk driving. Checking will be intensified in at least 18 major intersections across the city for the purpose.

Meanwhile, to attract customers and ensure an eventful celebration, hotels, resorts and clubs in the city have announced special New Year packages featuring live music, themed parties and gala dinners. Sources said many luxury hotels, restaurants and hospitality hotspots on Janpath road, Jayadev Vihar, Patia and Khandagiri-Patrapada stretch have already witnessed a surge in bookings.

"To make the celebrations special, we have come up with a unique black and white ball party theme that will feature both soulful performances and electrifying beats. A lavish gala buffet will make the event more special for the guests," said an official from Hotel Pal Heights on Jayadev Vihar road.

Many hotels and event venues are even offering special arrangements for families including children to ensure no one misses out the celebration. Restaurants and cafes have also announced special menu for couples looking for a quieter celebration.

15 PLATOONS POLICE TO BE MOBILISED IN CUTTACK

Cuttack: To ensure maintenance of law and order during Zero Night celebrations in Cuttack, the Commissionerate Police has planned to deploy around 15 platoons of police force and 200 home guards across the city on Wednesday. This apart, quick response teams will also be mobilised at 10 strategic locations to check disruptions by anti-socials.

DCP Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo said they have already intensified enforcement against drunk driving. “Around 20 two-wheelers and some four-wheelers have been seized for drunk driving in the last two days. Vehicle checking and patrolling have also been intensified,” he said adding, those found driving under the influence of alcohol will face legal action.

A close vigil will also be kept on hotels, clubs and bars and other anti-social hotspots, the DCP said. “Playing of music beyond permissible limits and after midnight have been strictly prohibited,” he said, appealing people to ensure a smooth and peaceful celebration.
