CHENNAI: Leaving no room for any suspicion about converting his Gopalapuram residence into a hospital for the poor in the coming years, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi’s three sons — M K Azhagiri, M K Stalin and M K Thamizharasu — on Friday handed over the property to fulfil his wish.

Karunanidhi and his wife Dayalu Ammal were handed over the document after their sons signed it in the presence of an official from the land registration department.

Karunanidhi, while inaugurating the Kalaiganar Health Insurance Scheme for life-saving treatment for the poor in July, had announced that his residence would be converted into a free hospital in the name of his parents Anjugam Ammal and Muthuvelar after his and his wife’s lifetime.

The Chief Minister had said that way back in 1968, he had registered the Gopalapuram residence in the name of his sons and that after him and his wife, the house would be handed over either to the Tamil Nadu government or Kalaignar Charitable Trust for running a hospital for the poor.

Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence is valued at Rs 8 crore.
