CHENNAI: Several voters of Kolathur couldn’t wipe the smile off their face much after the wife of Deputy Chief Minister, Durga, left their house on Saturday. After all, it’s not everyday that a family member of the ruling party comes knocking on your door.
Draped in a sari with a big bindi on her forehead, Durga has been conducting a door-to-door campaign for the last two days in places like G K M Colony and Jawahar Nagar, which fall within Stalin’s constituency, seeking votes for her husband. Stalin’s main opponent is Saidai Duraisami of the AIADMK.
With her pleasant smile and comely demeanour, she struck a personal chord with many. “We were happy to see Thalapathi’s wife at our house. It was like Mahalakshmi visiting us,” gushed a group of women in G K M Colony.
On Saturday evening, Durga was inside a vehicle, greeting voters at Kennedy Square as Stalin’s campaign convoy hit the road while women held aartis, and party workers danced and burst crackers.
Durga’s vehicle had a bevy of her close family members, party member Indira Kumari and Tamizhachi Thangapandian. As two escorts for the vehicle announced Durga’s presence, delighted women rushed to touch her. Durga acknowledged the enthusiastic women with a smile. “We shall ensure victory,” a group of women told her.
“I am surprised by the overwhelming response from the voters. They assured me not just of DMK’s victory, but said they will make my husband win with a huge majority,” she told Express.
“I have been campaigning for my husband for a long time silently. I have visited Kolathur when my husband was the mayor,” she said, adding that she would continue the door-to-door campaign till the last day.
