Valarmathi discharged from disproportionate assets case

Express News Service

Social Welfare Minister B Valarmathi and her family members were on Monday discharged by a Special Court from a  disproportionate assets case that was filed by the previous DMK regime.

This followed the admission of a petition by her with a prayer to discharge her in the case, which she said was foisted owing to political vendetta.

The case pertained to the charge that Valarmathi had bought assets in the name of her husband M V Balasubramanian and her sons B Muthamizhan and B Muvendan. It was alleged that she had amassed wealth to the tune of `1.70 crore which were disproportionate to her known sources of income between 2001 and 2006.

In the petition, Valarmathi sought to be discharged from the offences and said that the case was politically motivated and was followed by a shoddy probe.  The investigating agencies, the petition alleged, had miserably failed to place all relevant documentary proof collected during the investigations.

Certain vital facts were deliberately suppressed and omitted.

Delivering the order, Judge of the Special Court, B Vijayalakshmi, said the petition was being allowed and the minister was discharged from the case.
