CHENNAI: The much awaited Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) section between Velachery and St Thomas Mount, covering suburban areas, is likely to be commissioned this year.

Making an announcement, Minister for Railways Dinesh Trivedi also proposed to run 18 additional services for Chennai Beach-Tambaram, Chennai Beach-Chengalpattu, Chennai Beach-Avadi, Chennai Beach-Tiruttani, Chennai Beach - Gummidipundi/Sullurupetta and Chennai Beach-Velachery sections falling under Chennai, while presenting the budget on Wednesday.

Also, Avadi-Guduvancheri via Sriperumbudur & Oragadam new line project has been sent to Planning Commission for appraisal and new line surveys would be taken up for Chennai to Sriperumbudur via Guindy, Poonamallee and Kan-chipuram-Thiruvannamalai-Katpadi.

Apparently, doubling works on the Attipattu-Ennore fourth line, Ottivakkam - Madurantakam, Melmaruvthur - Tozhuppedu, Tindivanam-Perani, Arakknonam-Tiruvalangadu and Ariyalur-Valadi would be completed during 2012-13.
