The electric crematorium at the Kannamapettai burial ground in T Nagar will be not be in use until October 14.

In an official communication from the Chennai Corporation, the authorities said that the crematorium would not be in use due to maintenance and servicing work that happens once a year regularly. “This is nothing but a scheduled break for maintenance. The facility will be up and running once it is over,” said a Corporation official.

Apart from the servicing, a fuel plate that is used for burning the bodies is in a state of disrepair, due to which the burning of bodies has been temporarily stopped, said the official.  The repair and maintenance work have put the electric crematorium out of use for the next two weeks.  The graveyard would be used only for burial purposes till then, he added.  The communique has advised the public to use the crematoriums at Saidapet, Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam till the work is over.
