Single women and the battles

A State-level consultation meeting on issues faced by single women was held at the Centre Of Women’s Development and Research (CWDR), Nungambakkam. Executive director of CWDR K R Renuka presided over the meet which was attended by heads of various NGO.

Psychologists and women’s rights activists from across the State also took part.

Metropolitan Magistrate Geetha highlighted some of the gruesome incidents in which single women were targeted.

Explaining about the legal assistance provided for single women, Geetha said there was a provision by which lawyers may argue free of cost for deserted women.

Ranjini, an activist, said,  “The 12th Five Year Plan talks about tax benefits and a single woman inheriting her husband’s pension. A single woman forum for every district is proposed and so is a national rule for the empowerment of women.”
