Express News Service

Two men from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were injured when a hand grenade exploded during a training session at the Hanumanthapuram firing range, in Singaperumal Koil, near Chengalpattu on Monday.

Police said over 50 CRPF personnel from the Regimental Training Centre, Avadi, were at the firing range for training in firing and hurling hand grenades.

On Monday morning, police sources said, assistant sub-inspector S N Singh, (45) who was training constables, was showing constable Prabathkar (25) how to hurl a HE-36 hand grenade. Police sources said S N Singh took a grenade, removed the safety pin and hurled it. However, it exploded mid air, much before it was expected to explode.

“Usually it takes four seconds to explode after removing the safety pin,” a police official said.

S N Singh sustained injuries to his neck and cheek while Prabathkar sustained minor injuries.

Both were rushed to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital for treatment. Maraimalainagar police registered a case under Explosives Act.
