Express News Service

The Rotary Club of Madras had taken 36 school students from 12 schools in the city on a four-day tour on ‘Water Study’ to Rajasthan, as part of its initiative to create awareness among children on the importance of water conservation. The team was sent off by Rotary district governor Raja Seenivasan, president of RCM Rajendran Sabanayagam and other rotarians on Tuesday. The study group, led by  A S Venkhat Ramani, director, New generation, will return on October 30.

The students will visit the Triveni water institute in Jaipur. The institute is a centre of excellence focusing on issues related to water management, including facilitating zero water discharge, rainwater harvesting, waste water treatment and desalination.

The tour will also give the students an opportunity to interact with experienced professionals and water conservationists that will help them understand the importance of water conservation.

During the four-day tour, the students will also visit places in Rajasthan that suffer acute water scarcity. Phagi, located around 50 km from Jaipur, is one such village where people walk a long distance everyday to fetch water from ponds and wells.

The students will spend time with the villagers to understand their plight.
