Suicide victim’s kin stone MTC bus

Express News Service

A road-roko by relatives and friends of an 18-year-old girl who recently committed suicide -- demanding the arrest of those allegedly responsible for her death -- turned violent on Tuesday evening.

The protestors allegedly ended up damaging the rear window of an MTC bus on Tuesday evening and five of them were arrested.

The girl, Meena, who lived with her family in Kilpauk, allegedly committed suicide on October 6.

A police complaint was then lodged by her father Ravi, alleging that their neighbour Prakash and his family - which included Govindasamy, a traffic policeman from Triplicane - threatened and coerced her to marry him.

Ravi claimed that his daughter chose to end her life as she was disturbed by the pressure from Prakash’s family.

The Ayanavaram police registered a case and investigated the matter.

Last week, the police arrested five relatives of Prakash in connection with the case. However, Prakash and Govindasamy were not picked up as they were reportedly missing.

Enraged over this, over 100 family members and neighbours of the girl staged a roko on the busy Medavakkam Tank Road, demanding the arrest of Prakash and the traffic policeman.

When the police asked them to leave immediately, things went out of hand and the protestors hurled stones at an MTC bus (route 22) and broke its rear windows.

“The bus driver and passengers were unhurt, but a case was registered against the protestors. Five of them were arrested,” said a senior police official from Kilpauk.

The official also claimed that Govindasamy was not involved in the incident as he had managed to establish a clear alibi.
