JJ Nagar terminus lacks basic amenities

Sudarshan Ramabadran

Despite being used for over 22 years by scores of passengers every day, the bus terminus in Mogappair East, (J J Nagar terminus) continues to lack basic amenities.

The lack of proper facility for seating and shelter besides inadequate lighting are the major concerns of the commuters.

With  at least 33 buses plying to various destinations from the terminus besides scores of buses coming in, the poor condition of the terminus is cited as ‘worrisome’ by users.

“During peak hours, one can notice the trouble faced by the people. Especially, for senior citizens, it is even more tough as there is no seating arrangement in place. All along, elders need to stand while waiting for a bus,” said Ramani, a resident of Mogappair East Although Mogappair East has a population of more than a lakh, a majority of buses ply only  through Mogappair West, he rued.

Several other residents like Ramani felt that it was important to develop the bus terminus as more and more people were getting settled in the neighbourhood, thus increasing the need for buses complete with basic amenities in terminus.

“With more and more people, not only the demand for buses, but also the need for a usable and clean terminus has increased,” Ramani said.

When contacted, an MTC official acknowledged that representations had indeed been received from commuters. “The development work iat the terminus would start as soon as the improvement work in the west Terminus is complete,” he said reassuringly.
