From our online archive

Barely a week after a 30-year-old native of Himachal Pradesh slipped into coma after he was knocked down by a speeding vehicle at Pallavaram that also killed his son, his family are seeking financial assistance to continue his treatment at the Deepam hospital in Tambaram.

On February 2, Dinesh Kumar, his wife and their two sons, including Naman (4), were waiting with other relatives to board a bus for Tirupati at the Reva Junction near Pallavaram  when a speeding SUV rammed into them. A grievously injured Naman was declared brought dead when taken to hospital. Dinesh, who sustained head injuries, was shifted to a private hospital where he slipped into coma. The family still does not have details of the vehicle that caused the accident.

The family, who hailed from Subathu, Solan district in Himachal Pradesh, had arrived in the city to visit relatives and were going for a pilgrimage. Dinesh, an insurance agent, was the lone bread winner.

Although doctors treated a fracture on his arm, they were unable to bring him out of the coma, according to Rakesh Kumar, Dinesh’s cousin. He said that the family had spent about Rs 5 lakh so far for his treatment. However, they would need several more lakhs of rupees to help Dinesh recover and get off the ventilator. Those interested in providing assistance to the family may contact Deepam Hospital (044 - 22646000) or Rakesh (09445808892).
