The Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Wednesday celebrated the first year of its liquid oxygen tank installation.
Doctors at the hospital said that large number of patients have benefited from the facility, which has a capacity of 13,000 litres.
“Earlier, we used to unload 400 cylinders a day. There were chances of injury while unloading and replacing the cylinders. Now, we refill it only once in every four days, which reduces the expenditure for manpower,” said Dr V Kanagasabai, Dean, MMC and RGGGH.
Health Minister K C Veeramani, who was part of the celebrations, expressed his happiness over offering services to large number of patients at a lesser cost.
A government order was passed in 2007 to install the tank, which became functional in 2012. Doctors said liquid oxygen consumption has lessen after the tank was installed.
“The average oxygen left out in a bulk cylinder is about 10 per cent. This loss is also totally avoided now,” a doctor said.
