Daniel Thimmayya

Renowned Gastroenterologist N Rangabashyam, who passed away on Sunday, was known as a pioneer who propelled the growth of the speciality in India.

“It is only after he started the M Ch (Surgical Gastroenterology) course in MMC, for the first time in India, did people begin looking into this specialty,” said Dr V Kanagasabai, Dean of Madras Medical Collge, recalling the late doctor’s contribution.

“He was the pioneer of surgical gastroenterology and though there has been a lot of advancement ever since, not much was being done for patients with stomach, intestine and liver complications till he decided to make a change,” recalled Dr George Chandy, director of Gastroenterology at MIOT Hospitals.

He was “the embodiment of an internationally renowned surgeon” for most doctors, added Chandy.
