NIIT classroom goes up in flames, no casualty

Express News Service

A classroom on the third floor of the NIIT building in Nungambakkam caught fire on Tuesday evening, but there was no casualty. Fire department personnel suspect an electrical short-circuit to be the cause of the fire.

The fire department received an alert at 7.50 pm and rushed to the scene. Fortunately, the institute was closed for the day. However, equipment, including computers, furniture, false ceiling etc, were gutted.

“The classroom where the fire started was located on the third floor. There was a generator fixed above the room and we suspect the fire could have broken out from the generator due to an electrical short-circuit, spreading through the false ceiling into the classroom. Combustible materials like the false ceiling and cushions from chairs caused a lot of smoke,” Assisstant Fire Divisonal Officer Rajesh Kannan said.

Fire tenders from Triplicane, Teynampet and Egmore were pressed into service.
