At least seven departments at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras are actively involved in developing solutions that will go a long way in the treatment of lifestyle-related diseases.

Speaking to CE on the sidelines of a MoU signing ceremony here on Friday, institute director Bhaskar Ramamurthi said that solutions for the diagnosis and prevention of diseases such as diabetes and cancer using sensors and markers were among its priority. The ‘ARTSENS’, a solution to measure the stiffness of arteries and blood vessel walls, was among the latest of its research outputs, he noted.

He added that the need for affordable as well as instant result generating diagnosis tools were essential to the nation.

In addition, the IIT-M is also bestowing attention on renewable energy solutions. “We are working on using energy generated from solar photo-voltaic cells to meet peak-load energy demands,” he said.

The IIT-M director also added that developments in battery technology were being explored.
