Living the Rural Dream on Frames

S Subhakeerthana

CHENNAI: The hustle and bustle of a typical village sandhai, women harvesting paddy, tall green trees, cows grazing on fields and clear blue skies — While these sights are getting rarer, for artist Kumaresan, these form the subject of his canvass paintings at Achalam Art Gallery. The series of paintings is a subtle reminder of a simple life. “I grew up in a village and have represented the close relation between animals and human beings,” says Kumaresan.

His female subjects, painted in vivid tones of browns, greens, crimson, reds, yellows and blues, have well-defined expressive eyes and lips that mirror their expressions. Kumaresan has also paid attention to details of the women’s jewellery, flowers and clothes.

His art pieces predominantly portray women in the natural surroundings, performing their day-to-day activities. A few carry baskets of fish on their heads and a few others sit gossiping with each other. “Rural landscapes are interesting that we can keep recreating them. My creative expressions are a blend of my experiences in the rural and city life,” says Kumaresan.

The exhibition is on till December 9.
