The Government Naturopathy and Yoga Medical College and Hospital at Arumbakkam will soon have a separate ward to admit patients who will be spared the trouble of travelling everyday to get treatment as outpatients.

With the construction of a separate building, the hospital which is attached to the college will soon have a 50-bedded in-patient ward. Doctors at the hospital said patients would be admitted after analyzing their health condition.

“By admitting some patients who undergo treatment for lifestyle disorders, we can help them follow a proper diet and make other lifestyle changes. There are also some patients who can’t travel all the way here every day for treatment. Of course, we also have some patients saying that they can’t find some food we suggest in their diet. In-patient ward will benefit such people,” a doctor said.

The college, which is the only government-run institution for naturopathy and yoga sciences in the State apart from four private colleges, had been functioning since the year 2000 with a 20-student intake for a five-year Bachelor in Naturopathy and Yoga Sciences degree.

The hospital offers a variety of drugless treatment for lifestyle disorders including reflexology, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, acupressure, steam bath, massage therapy, mud therapy, diet and counselling apart from yoga and meditation. But till now, the patients were able to avail all these treatments only as out-patients while colleges and hospital for other Indian medicine including Siddha, Ayurveda and Unani, that have its campus also in Arumbakkam have in-patient wards.
