CHENNAI: As a part of the city’s lake restoration initiative, the State government, through the Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) and Chennai River Restoration Trust (CRRT), has initiated the feasibility study to restore the Paruthipattu Lake in Avadi.

The government, in the process of restoring lakes, waterways and rivers within Chennai Metropolitan Area covering an area of 1,189 square kilometres, has initiated the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for various lakes through the Chennai River Restoration Trust (CRRT).

A detailed project report will be made on restoring the Paruthipattu Lake which has a combined catchment area of 2.45 square kilometres on technical, financial, environmental and social grounds.

The study will also explore the ways to improve ground water recharge and rain water harvesting including connectivity between lakes and waterways in the vicinity. The report will also suggest a plan to restore the lake in an environmentally sustainable way, which will contribute to the long term sustainability of the lake.

Sources from CRRT said that they had been instructed to start the work on preparing the project report, but were not sure as to when the project would be implemented by the government.

The scope of the project includes creating coherent and visually-pleasing order to the water’s edge like landscape, walking tracks and children play area.

With these facilities, the project, if implemented, will be boon to the residents of Avadi and will serve as an alternative hangout spot to the Marina.
