CHENNAI: Doing their bit to tackle power shortage crisis, Sriram Engineering College installed a 100 KW photovoltaic (PV) solar power plant on their campus. The power plant will produce electricity from solar power.

The on-grid PV plant was inaugurated by Tiruvallur District Collector K Veera Raghava Rao on the college campus in Perumalpattu recently. The plant is capable of generating power that meets 25 per cent of the institution’s demands while complying with the two per cent solar power purchase obligation stipulated by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission.

“This plan is a step in the right way to meet the Tamil Nadu government’s vision of generating 3,000 MW of solar power by 2015, and the Indian government’s plan of generating 22,000 MW of solar energy by 2022,” said Rao. “Exploring renewable energy source alternatives is the only way to ensure energy security of the country considering that all natural fossil fuels are fast depleting,” he added.

The plant has been set up at an estimated cost of `83 lakh, with money pooled in from the college management as well as subsidies provided by the State Government.

College authorities informed that the setting up of the plant will benefit students as it will provide them with a chance to get hands-on training on the technology, thus boosting their employment potential.
