CHENNAI: An Albino crow, lying wounded on the streets of Uttaramerur was brought to Vandalur Zoo on Thursday by a young boy.
“A young man from the village brought it to us today morning. The bird’s wings were clipped and it was in pain. But it’s alright now,” said a Zoo official. The crow was treated at the Zoo hospital. The officials feel that it must have been pecked by black crows.
It is the third time that Vandalur Zoo has treated an Albino crow (a white crow). The Albino crow is considered to be rare and is on the verge of extinction, its death usually occurs when it becomes victims of its own breed. Many white crows die after being clawed or pecked by black crows. The excess white pigment in its body makes it different from the rest, but it shares similar characteristics with the other crows.
This white-feathered, pink-eyed bird will be sheltered in the Zoological Park. The officials have also begun working on breeding this extinct bird. “We are planning to introduce methods to keep this rare species alive. But we are yet to chalk out plans,” said the Zoo’s PRO.
