AU Prof Warns People Against Climbing Mobile Towers To Protest

Express News Service

CHENNAI:  In the aftermath of the death of anti-liquor activist Sasi Perumal, who climbed on top of a mobile phone tower demanding prohibition, former Anna University professor of physics and UGC professor emeritus P K Palanisamy has expressed concern over people getting exposed to intense radiation during such dramatic protests.

“The radiation emitted by these cell-phone towers is intense. It is not advisable to go near them as it may cause cancer. Hence, people climbing the towers and standing there for hours is a worrisome trend as it would affect their health,” said the professor.

When the heat emitted by cell-phones itself is so high, imagine that at the top of cell-phone towers, he said. “The blood might begin to boil,” he added.

People are unaware of the harmful effects of radiation, Palanisamy said. “I read that Sasi Perumal vomitted blood. It could have been because of radiation,” he further said, and expressed concern about the lack of monitors for such radiations.
